The Role of Prolactin
Often known as lactotroph, prolactin plays a vital role in milk production in both humans and animals. It has been shown to play a role in over 300 different processes in vertebrates.
Low levels can cause infertility
Almost one-third of women in their childbearing years have high levels of prolactin. The hormone is made by the pituitary gland in the brain, and its primary function is to help the body produce breast milk after the birth of a baby. However, when levels of prolactin are too high, they can interfere with normal ovulation. This can cause irregular periods and infertility.
Hyperprolactinemia is a condition in which the gland produces too much prolactin. It can be caused by several factors. In some cases, a group of cells forms a cyst in the pituitary gland, which causes it to overproduce prolactin.
Other conditions, such as PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), may also affect the amount of prolactin a woman produces. If a person is diagnosed with this condition, her doctor will perform a fertility work-up to identify the cause of her infertility. This can include a thyroid test and ultrasound evaluation of the ovaries.
High levels of prolactin can also be caused by certain medications. In addition, some women have an ovulation disorder, a condition in which the ovaries are not producing sufficient estrogen to support ovulation. These disorders affect the production of breast milk and can lead to infertility.
When a woman is diagnosed with an ovulation disorder, her doctor may order an MRI scan to examine her pituitary gland. This can be a safe and effective method of treatment. If a tumor is detected, a physician may prescribe medication to shrink it. During the procedure, a small blood sample is taken from the patient.
The test results are usually given in the form of a number. If you are concerned about the results, talk to your healthcare provider. You can learn more about laboratory tests and reference ranges to better understand your results.
If you think you might have a hormonal imbalance that could affect your fertility, your healthcare provider can perform a simple blood test to determine the level of prolactin in your system. The doctor will also be able to prescribe medicine or surgery to help treat the problem.
If a woman is diagnosed with prolactinoma, her doctor will be able to prescribe medication to shrink the tumor. If the tumor is large, it may be necessary to undergo surgery. If it is smaller, it may be treated with a dopamine D2 receptor agonist, which can normalize the secretion of prolactin. This can be a more effective treatment than surgery and may prevent surgery.
Signs of a prolactinoma
Symptoms of prolactinoma are related to the amount of excess prolactin in the blood. In addition, the size of the tumor can also play a role in the onset of symptoms. A large prolactinoma can press on nearby structures in the head, causing headaches, vision loss, and problems with hormone production.
Other signs of prolactinoma include low libido, decreased muscle power, and infertility. Infertility occurs because the egg release from the ovary is impaired.
Generally, women are more likely to develop a prolactinoma than men. Occasionally, the condition occurs in children. Typically, it occurs in people under the age of 40. However, it can also occur in adults. In rare cases, a prolactinoma is associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. A family with this condition may have an unknown genetic factor.
The most common prolactinomas are small. They usually have a diameter of less than one centimeter. They are usually benign, and they can be treated by medications and surgery. Depending on the size of the tumor, patients might also need radiation therapy.
The pituitary gland, located under the middle of the brain, produces several hormones. The cells within the pituitary gland make a hormone called prolactin. It is responsible for several bodily processes, including the development of mammary glands and breast milk.
In some cases, the pituitary gland may become enlarged, causing prolactin levels to rise. Depending on the blood test results, replacement hormones may be needed. Aside from the pituitary gland, other glands in the endocrine system can also produce excess prolactin. If this happens, it can affect the thyroid and ovarian glands. It can also reduce the production of other hormones. If left untreated for a long time, it can cause osteoporosis.
Prolactinomas can be treated with medications, surgery, or radiation therapy. These treatments work by shrinking the tumor and normalizing the blood prolactin levels. During treatment, doctors may need to monitor the person for the recurrence of the tumor.
A CT scan can help determine the size of a prolactinoma. A CT scan is a procedure that uses a series of X-ray images taken at different angles.
Treatments for high levels
Various medicines and procedures can be used to treat high levels of prolactin. This hormone is produced in the brain, adipose tissues, the pituitary gland, and the uterus. Aside from pregnancy, the primary function of prolactin is to help women produce breast milk.
High levels of prolactin can also be caused by pituitary tumors. Symptoms of hyperprolactinemia include irregular menstrual periods and infertility. The treatment for this condition may involve surgery or medications to shrink the tumor. In rare cases, radiation therapy is also used.
The most common drugs used to reduce prolactin are bromocriptine and cabergoline. These drugs mimic dopamine, which helps prevent the prolactin-producing cells in the pituitary from growing. If you’re pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, however, you should stop taking this medicine.
Besides medication, surgery can be used to remove tumors from the pituitary. If the tumor is small, surgery is usually successful. For larger tumors, surgery can be less effective. In some cases, patients have to undergo several pituitary scans. This can help to determine if the tumor is benign or cancerous.
A prolactin test is done by obtaining a blood sample. This is then taken to the lab. The results are given in the form of a number. If you have any questions about your results, you should consult with your doctor.
The prolactin test is relatively easy to perform. A nurse or lab worker inserts a needle into your arm and collects a sample of blood. The results are then reviewed. If the sample is abnormal, a repeat test is performed.
For many people, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia (a condition in which prolactin levels are higher than normal without any known cause) goes away on its own. In other cases, a doctor might order a blood test or an MRI to determine if there is a pituitary tumor. Surgical treatments are available, but they are not used in most cases.
High levels of prolactin are usually harmless, but they can cause menstrual problems, infertility, and difficulty in erection. Some medicines for ulcers, stress and depression also raise prolactin. The best way to treat high prolactin levels is to avoid medicines that raise it, like tranquilizers and anti-depressants.
Cost of a prolactin test
Having a prolactin test can be helpful for certain health conditions. This test measures how much prolactin is in the blood. It is most often performed to detect prolactinoma, a benign tumor that can produce high levels of prolactin.
In addition, it can be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment. After treatment is completed, the test may be repeated to check if the tumor has returned.
This type of test is usually performed in a medical office or laboratory. It usually takes about three to four hours. However, it can take longer because of delays in the lab or weather conditions.
The test is not covered by most health insurance plans. If you don’t have insurance, you can ask the testing facility for financial assistance. You can also shop around to find a lower price. Typically, you will be required to have itemized receipts for reimbursement purposes.
The cost of a prolactin test can range from $300 to $500. It depends on where the test is performed and the laboratory fees. It can also be performed at home, saving time and money. It is important to talk to your doctor to get further information.
The test is a blood sample that is taken from the arm. The area where the blood is drawn is cleaned with disinfectant liquid. A small amount of pain is felt during the procedure. It is best to fast for nine to twelve hours before the test.
Several factors can affect the results of the test, including age, stress, and the use of medications. In addition, women who are breastfeeding have higher levels of prolactin than non-breastfeeding women.
Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. It is used to control other endocrine system components. It plays a role in breast development and milk production. Having a high level of prolactin can cause erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men and infertility in women. It is also a hormone that can be affected by pregnancy.
A prolactin test is usually done in a hospital or clinical laboratory. It can be ordered by your physician, or you can order one online.
