What You Should Know About MRI

MRI creates detailed pictures of organs, bones, and other tissues
MRI is a noninvasive medical imaging procedure that uses a magnetic field to create detailed pictures of organs, bones, and other tissues. It is used to diagnose cancer, stroke, and other conditions. This procedure is very safe, but there are some risks involved.
During an MRI scan, you will lie down on a table that is movable. A radiologist will guide you through the procedure. They will answer any questions you may have and talk to you using an intercom system. You can also talk to them with the microphone.
Your radiologist may ask you to perform some simple tasks. This can help them locate brain regions controlling specific functions. For example, they may ask you to hold your breath while taking a measurement. They may also give you a contrast liquid. This contrast agent is FDA-approved and helps improve the visibility of tissue that is relevant to the scan.

Some metals can also distort MRI images. Watches, credit cards, and electronic hair accessories are all examples of objects that can be damaged during an MRI. Some types of metal coils used within blood vessels are also not recommended for MRI.
Some patients have a mild allergic reaction to the contrast dye that is used to enhance certain details on MRI images. This reaction is rare but can cause itchy eyes, nausea, and headaches.
MRI effects on fetuses aren’t well understood
MRIs for pregnant women can be done, but the effects of the magnetic field are not well understood. Depending on your pregnancy, your doctor may advise you to postpone an MRI scan or choose another exam. For example, some types of clips used to diagnose brain aneurysms may pose unknown risks to the developing baby.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for an MRI scan. First, you may need to discuss any anxiety you have about the exam with your doctor.
